 Project Manager – Engineering

The Role:

 Our Support Function currently wish to recruit a Project Engineer for a specific purpose contract. This role will report to the Head of Civil Engineering.

 The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:

  •  Lead and project manage delivery of large scale multi-contract engineering projects through procurement, financing and construction and commissioning phases to full operation ensuring all project deliverables and key performance indicators are achieved. 
  • Ensure project is procured,financed, constructed and commissioned in accordance with Bord na Mona’s large project management procedures and guidelines.
  • Identify and assess key lessons learned on project to define recommendations for designs, specifications, project management procedures and guidelines to ensure advantages of lessons learned are gathered and implemented to the benefit of future project development and delivery throughout Bord na Mona.Co-ordinate all stakeholders throughout project and service delivery including Operations Management, Health & Safety Department, other engineering disciplines and external engineering service providers to ensure that project and service key performance targets are achieved.
  • Identify and implement most economically advantageous procurement route for project delivery. In conjunction with Legal Department, develop legal contracts for project delivery ensuring financial and commercial risks to Bord na Mona are minimised whilst also ensuring contractual obligations are reasonably attainable by all parties.
  • With support from relevant internal functions direct the tender and negotiation process for procurement of all equipment supply, civil, electrical and mechanical balance of plant contracts and any necessary construction professional services for the project. 
  • Provide the necessary technical input, project information and liaison with professional services providers during project funding/financing phase.  Prepare robust and comprehensive capital budget for the project. Monitor against budget, individual cost elements, to predict and assess potential overspends. Monitor and review emerging and previously identified commercial and financial risks to the project. Ensure timely action is taken to control overspends and identify remedial actions to recover overspends to ensure delivery of project within CAPEX / OPEX budgets.Manage project or contract variations, ensuring relevant information is recorded and any contract disputes are managed in accordance with formal dispute resolution procedures
  • Assess the project objectives, identify all resources and timescales required to achieve the project outcomes and prepare the project delivery plan including initial programme to be adjusted with contractor schedules when available for project master plan. Develop strategy for the mitigation of project delivery risks. Monitor the project programme to ensure delivery of milestones and works on schedule, ensure remedial actions are taken to recover project overruns to deliver project on time.
  • Define project resource requirements and assemble project construction team. Lead, manage and co-ordinate project construction teams to oversee all stages of construction activity and ensure works are carried out to the required quality standards and safety and environmental legislation and regulations.  Ensure all key aspects of project contracts,including accounts, are monitored appropriately and in accordance with good contract administration practice.  Ensure appropriate site processes and controls are in place for proper coordination and recording of all work and report on project progress, key issues and risks at required intervals.       
  • Establish arrangements for achieving effective communications between all parties during the project procurement, financing, construction and commissioning. Lead the development and implementation of a pro-active community engagement plan for the construction phase of projects taking account of effective stakeholder management and good industry practice.  
  • Co-ordinate and monitor activities of all project support functions, both internal and outsourced service providers
  • All employees are expected to co-operate fully with all provisions taken by the company for ensuring Health and Safety, and Welfare of co-employees and members of the public using the premises.  Identify,understand and apply all Health & Safety legislation and regulatory requirements as a fundamental element of any construction undertaken ensuring safety of employee’s and members of the public during construction, testing and commissioning.  
  • Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team’s, objectives.


The Person:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:


  • NFQ Level 8 Engineering
  • Degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical, or equivalent in related technical/scientific discipline.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Project Management would be an advantage for the role.
  • 8+ years in the construction industry with 5 years in a similar role
  • Experience with the construction of Large Scale Infrastructural Projects
  • Membership and Professional Title from a relevant professional body would be an advantage.
  • Extensive knowledge of Contract Management, Financial /  Cost Management and  Project Management
  • required for this role .  
  • Extensive knowledge of construction, health & safety and environmental legislation and regulations required for
  • this role.       
  • Excellent Technical
  • Report writing and communications skills essential.                                                                                                
  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel and MS Project.
