SMO: Social Media Optimization….

Posted in News on June 30th, 2009

So, Social Media Optimization. What’s this all about? Well, I personally think that it is a very good derivitive of the whole SEO subject. It is by definition, a method of gererating publicity through online PR with a focus on social networking, social media and online community building. It is an essential part of the mix. By doing ‘SMO’ you are adding another dimension to your online visibility. It allows for traffic to driven to your site through another avenue other than search engines.

SMO can be quite a varied task. There’s a lot of options available! Generating publicity can be done in lots of places in many ways. RSS feeds, blogging, using Flickr and YouTube, social media sites and social networking sites can all be used to communicate your message.

SMO is definitely something to pay credence too. Just as SEO is now an imperitive skill, spending time on devleloping a social media strategy is of great importance. The possibilities are endless. More to the point though, it’s more fun. Playing around in the communities is quite an enjoyable way of doing marketing. Essentially we all spend our time looking at, reading and watching content within these communities anyway, so we may as well be tweaking little bits here and there for the greater good of our own sites.

WPP sees confidence returning

WPP, the world’s largest advertising group, sees confidence returning to the economy, but this has yet to result in new ad spending, Chief Executive Martin Sorrell said.
“Compared with three months ago confidence has risen, managers are showing a change, but they have not translated that into new investments,” he told Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore.
“Heart and wallet remain divided,” he said. Sorrell said China was an exception, noting that in April the advertising sector there grew 25 percent thanks to infrastructure investments and fiscal stimulus measures.
He said WPP would continue to invest in internet services.
“12 percent of WPP’s world budget in 2009 is internet. You and I spend 20 percent of our time on the web. In two years’ time up to 20 percent of WPP’s budget will be internet and we will be spending 30 percent of our time surfing (the web).”

What is Event Management?

Event management refers to methods of outsourcing business occasions, social occasions, or a combination of both. There is no limit to the business development ideas for an event management business. It is possible to organize every kind of event ranging from wedding to a political rally. An event management team can be retained for any type of business meeting.

500 Billion Dollar Industry:

Last 15 years have witnessed a tremendous growth in the field of event management. If we add the amount of money spent on event management all over the world in one year it comes to a whopping 500 billion dollars. Gone are the days when we could do with hiring only a small catering team that supplies the food for a business event. If you wish to make an impression on your potential clients today, hiring a meeting management company is a necessity.

Events of Any Range Can Be Managed:

If you wish to start an event management business and you are looking for business development ideas for it then you will be happy to know that you can start this business for any range. It is possible to manage an event for only a small group of people. On the other hand, you can manage mega events for five thousand people and more.

People prefer to choose an event management team that is known for its expertise in this field. When you plan an event, it not only consumes your valuable time but also produces much stress. Event management business owners have contacts in this field and they can offer you the best possible services at the most competitive prices.

Manage Accommodation and Entertainment:

As an event management business, when you organize an event involving five thousand people for a whole day, you should not assume that catering is the most difficult thing to manage. Accommodation and entertainment are also very important for managing such large events. You also require sufficient and efficient staff for the event. Moreover, you also have to plan about the size of the room, seating arrangements, and the total budget of the event. If you do not have enough expertise to deal with all of these factors, you may face difficulties in running event management business successfully.

External Factors Affecting Event Management Business:

Several external factors also affect the growth of the event management industry. Some of these factors are the rate of the growth of economy, lifestyle, and changing characteristics of the people living in the area. Tourism and branding activities like festivals and corporate activities such as conferences, product launches, award ceremonies, and gala dinners are under the scope of event management business. Key factors for the success of an event management business are reputation, network, service promotion, links with the suppliers, and high quality managerial skills.

Google AdWords Pro Jumps To Facebook

Facebook has snagged yet another executive from Google. Grady Burnett, who had led the company’s AdWords business in Ann Arbor, Mich., will leave to head online sales at Facebook. The move could help Facebook build a better ad-targeting platform and gain traction.
Burnett will help drive efforts for the tools that people use to create and run ad campaigns on the social network site. He reports to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, who left Google in 2008 after six years at the company supporting online sales channels for both AdWords and AdSense.
The argument among industry experts has been that some activity on Facebook helps to catch people in search cycles a bit further in the funnel, according to Danny Sullivan, editor in chief at Search Engine Land. “The Google and Facebook apps are similar in the sense they both allow a short message post,” he says. “The difference is they tend to show up more textually, based on the information the person sees and the information in the person’s profile.”
Tapping expertise from an ex-AdWords Googler who understands how people handle search advertising could give Facebook the boost it needs to build a better platform, Sullivan says.
David Gould, president at Resolution Media, says the move shows that Facebook is serious about doing a better job of monetizing the site. “With Sheryl Sandberg and now Grady Burnett leaving Google for Facebook, the hope is we’ll start to see more Google-like ad opportunities from Facebook,” he says. “The key is to create a more commercial mindset for Facebook users. Reaching consumers at the moment of relevance is what makes Google so powerful for marketers.”
The sentiment on the shift has been pretty much unanimous. Ex-Google employees can help build Facebook’s ad platform into a much more powerful tool for advertisers. David Szetela, owner of Clix Marketing and host of PPC Rockstars, calls the front and the back ends of the Facebook platform “primitive” compared with Google AdWords.
“Advertisers need better tools for organizing and managing the structure and content of ad campaigns,” Szetela says. “They need to use a variety of ad media types, such as text, static banners, animated banners and video. They need to generate detailed, flexible reports to optimize campaign performance.”
Szetela says if Facebook can achieve “superior targeting” and serve up tightly defined demographic ads focused on behavior, demographics and lifestyle, they could significantly boost ad revenue.

Phoenix Park - Bloom 2009
Bord Bia today announced its plans for Bloom 2009 which will take place in the Phoenix Park, Dublin over the June Bank Holiday weekend. ‘Grow Your Own’ is a central theme to the event, which has attracted over 100,000 visitors since its inaugural staging in 2007. As part of this year’s show, Bord Bia will build a replica of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Whitehouse Garden to promote the importance of healthy eating and to educate visitors on planting, harvesting and cooking your own food.
According to Aidan Cotter, Chief Executive, Bord Bia, “Bloom has continued to evolve since its launch and this year will reflect the rapidly changing environment that consumers are now experiencing. In times of economic uncertainty the role of the garden becomes increasingly important and we begin to recognise the significant health, social, economic and environmental benefits of gardening. This is reflected in the widespread trend in “growing your own” and the rise in both home and garden entertainment. Bloom 2009 will offer ideas and inspiration to help all those who wish to explore the full possibilities and make the most of their gardens.”
Bloom 2009 will include 25 show gardens from Ireland’s top horticultural talent, complemented by a spectacular floral pavilion featuring the best of Irish plants and flowers. Both the show gardens and the floral displays will be judged by international independent judging panels, including Chelsea Flower Show adjudicator, Andrew Wilson. Gold, silver gilt, silver and bronze medals will be awarded based on strict guidelines addressing both horticultural skills and design superiority. In 2008, 48 medals were awarded.
This year, some show gardens will be constructed on limited budgetsasmany visitors want a beautiful garden but are likely to have less disposable income to achieve it. Some of our gardens are designedto show what can be achieved when a professional designer is engaged, often with the gardenowner getting ‘dug in’ and carrying out the planting and unskilled labour themselves” said Gary Graham, Bloom Project Manager, Bord Bia. “We’ve seen an increase in designers using green walls, plants and lawn, rather than hard landscape materials, as more people turn to the garden as a place to unwind, de-stress and to gather with friends and family” he added.
Fiann O’Nuallain, a medal winner at Bloom 2007 and 2008, has joined forces with UNICEF Ireland to create a garden aimed at encouraging Ireland’s younger generation to learn more about horticulture and climate change. In preparation for Bloom, Fiann will work with a group of students aged between 14 – 17 years who are part of UNICEF Ireland’s nine month climate change programme. These students are ‘climate ambassadors’ who will represent Ireland at an international summit in Copenhagen this December.
Bloom 2009 will also include a garden designed by Rosa O’Connell from Cork, former vet and winner of RTE’s Super Garden series, which aired in 2008. Rosa beat off strong competition to win the first series of the show and is currently building a career as a garden designer. Rosa’s Bloom garden is inspired by a WB Yeats poem entitled ‘In the Seven Woods’.
The OPW, who provide the 70 acre site for Bloom, will open its walled kitchen garden to the public, which has been restored to its original Victorian style. The garden will allow visitors to learn more about the growing of fruit, vegetables and flowers and during the 5-day event, the Phoenix Park gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions. The GLDA (Garden and Landscape Designers Association) will also run daily workshops on garden design, tips on material choices and optimising your garden makeover budget.
As the nation searches for innovative ideas at a low cost, the students from Senior College Dun Laoghaire, under the auspices of design tutor Barry Lupton, have created an inspirational garden on a minuscule budget. “The only cost implications are a can of spray-marking paint, petrol for the lawnmower and our packed-lunches” explained second-year design student, Fiona Crudden. “Our mown grass labyrinth, inspired by the seasonal calendar, will provide visitors to Bloom with an opportunity for rest and reflection. Labyrinths can be found in almost every faith and culture across the world and being such a strong global symbol of reflection and growth, we felt it was particularly apt for Ireland 2009.”

Cannes Film Festival Copes with Recession
Penelope Cruz, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie among celebs adopting a low profile in deference to economic recession.

According to Reuters news agency, many A-list celebrities and studios attending the Cannes film festival are either skipping parties altogether or limiting their spending amid the global economic recession.

“It’s definitely down on last year,” said one industry publicist who declined to be identified. “The stars just aren’t there and the studios are spending less on parties. A lot less.”

Publicists are especially hard hit. Because many of the A-listers who normally attend parties such as those in Cannes are declining to attend, publicists find themselves stuck with fictitious press releases promising stars that never show up. That creates sour feelings between themselves and the journalists and photographers who cover the events the publicists are attempting to promote.

For example, instead of the star couple of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie–who were expected to show up at this year’s amfAR event, photographers at the 50th annual gala were treated to rapper 50 Cent, Twilight actor Robert Pattinson and former supermodels Eva Herzigova and Claudia Schiffer.

“Don’t believe them. Ever,” one jaded photographer said of the list.

The publicists and the stars and studios aren’t the only ones to blame for the no-shows. Much of the problems lie with the festival itself, which has leaned on less well-known–and less expensive–actors and actresses to draw in huge crowds. Since the global economic crisis descended in 2008, sponsorship of events and festivals by major studios has dropped precipitously as studios become more wary of ostentatious galas such as those hosted by the Cannes film festival. As a result, studios have become more selective about the events they plunk big money on, opting for those that would have the most direct impact–such as Brad Pitt’s appearance at the premiere of his film, Inglourious Basterds.

Yves Hanania, executive director for special events at the resort chain, the Nikki Beach, acknowledges the sparse parties of Cannes.

“But they’re [the studios] still willing to spend when it matters and there are still big names about,” he said in an interview with Reuters–an interview which took place not far from a seat at a restaurant where Eva Longoria Parker and husband Tony were dining.

Given that many stars are paid discreetly to attend many galas, the prospect of the endless party coming to a full stop is a long-shot. Still, when stars like Penelope Cruz decline to attend a function because of the flu–as Reuters noted–it’s natural for publicists and paparazzi to entertain the idea.

Meanwhile, party organizers struggling to get by are ensuring that the top talent make their way through the velvet rope–even if it means turning away several D-listers.

“A lot of the D-listers who are here for the swag are not getting in,” the publicist said.

Launch for Irish global business network
Loopthing, an international social business network, connecting businesses and individuals through social media, was launched this week by its founder, Corkman, Joseph Kely. Loopthing launches with 100 businesses currently using the network as a ‘global marketplace’. The company aims to increase this number to 80,000 by the end of this year and is currently in talks with international business associations. Loopthing is designed as an addition to a company’s website, to boost the communication, networking and revenue generating capabilities of business communities on a local, national and international level. It “develops industry specific applications to facilitate transactions in a centralised social business network enabled through video, audio, pictures and open file formats,” it said. “What we’re providing here is a new route to market for businesses worldwide. What’s most amazing about this is that we figured out a way to connect individuals and businesses through social media, so that everyone can benefit. It costs nothing to join and use the network, because our business model involves using only open source technology to keep the development and running costs low,” said Mr Kelly. “Much in the same way as Twitter became a new broadcasting tool, Linkedin an employee networking tool, and Youtube as your video channel, Loopthing wants to be seen as any company’s interactive online business card.”

WPP holds AGM in Dublin, revenues down
WPP, the biggest advertising company in the world, held its AGM in Dublin and told shareholders that its like-for-like revenue in the first four months of this year was down 6.7pc from a year earlier. WPP, which in April reported that revenues in the first quarter were down 5.8pc, said that the company had so far reduced headcount by almost 4,300 people, or 3.7pc, over the period. The company, which is aiming to reduce headcount by more than 7,000 this year, said that over half of those that have left did so on a voluntary basis. “As in the first quarter, the economic pressure was most keenly felt in the United States and this has spread to the United Kingdom and continental Europe, although eastern continental Europe still shows revenue growth for the first four months of 2009,” said WPP. “For the remainder of 2009 the short-term focus will continue to be on balancing staff costs and headcount, against the fall in revenues.” The company added that by communication sector, advertising and media planning and buying continued to be the “least affected” by the recession.
